Monthly Guide to Safari Excursions

Kenya, often regarded as the birthplace of safari travel, offers year-round safari vacation opportunities.

The variety of wildlife is considerably greater during the peak months, though, and the warmer weather usually makes for a more enjoyable safari trip.

Adventure in the wild safaris can assist you if you wish to go on a once-in-a-lifetime safari adventure but are unsure about the ideal time to go.

We’ve put together a monthly guide on East African safaris that you may peruse, including with information on the cost, wildlife, and weather.

January to March

If you want to see the wide variety of animals that Kenya has to offer, a safari at the beginning of the year is usually an excellent option.

After the brief rainy season of the preceding months, animals start to spread out over vast stretches in search of waterholes. Because of this, animals may be seen more easily in the sparser foliage, and they visit watering holes frequently in search of new pasture.

Every year, from January to March, the Great Migration calving season begins in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro and Serengeti Conservation areas, where approximately 500,000 new calves are born.

There will also be chances to see sizable herds of elephants in the Kenyan regions; February is a great month to visit the Maasai Mara and Laikipia for bird watching.

In Kenya, the high season brings scorching days with maximum variation. Our safari programs are tailored to your interests, needs, and budget, and include the best wildlife, history, beaches, and culture that Kenya has to offer.

If you’re considering traveling at the busiest time of year, consider our 12-day Magical Kenya Experience, which visits a variety of places. This will allow you to witness all of Kenya’s captivating features, including Masai Mara, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, and Aberdare National Park. Rates vary, so be prepared to pay a little bit extra if you want to make a reservation during the busiest time of year!

April–May

April and May are regarded as East Africa’s low season because of the unpredictable nature of tropical rainstorms that can occur during safari game viewing.

These are the months that Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda receive the most rainfall, which means that the rainy weather is not ideal for seeing wildlife.

The rain has, however, left the landscape and shrubs lush and green, providing stunning views and a chance to see a wide variety of plants.

Since there are often less people throughout the long rainy season, booking a safari during this time will allow you to take advantage of a discounted price.

June to September

You shouldn’t worry because the wet season is short! June will arrive soon, followed by months of hot, dry weather and a variety of fauna enjoying their native environment.

The “Big Five” can be seen in Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Samburu, Maasai Mara, Tsavo, Meru, Laikipia, the Aberdares, and Mount Kenya during the peak months of June, July, August, and September in Kenya.

You will have the chance to get up close and personal with the Big Five—lions, elephants, buffalos, rhinos, and leopards—in their native habitat during the safari of your choice.

The wildebeest migration, which sees vast herds of zebras, gazelles, and wildebeest migrate from Tanzania’s Serengeti into Kenya’s Masai Mara, is one of the most well-known wildlife spectacles the country has to offer.

Herds regularly swim over rivers teeming with crocodiles, offering a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience Kenya’s natural beauty.

Determining the exact moment of migration may be challenging due to changing environmental conditions. On the other hand, the wildebeest will begin to move around the middle of July and will not stop until they reach Tanzania in September or October.

You may choose from a variety of wildebeest safari excursions at Adventure in the wild safaris, which span all of the busy season months and come in varying pricing points and durations of stay.

Since the peak season is considered the busiest period for travelers to visit Kenya and the ideal time to fully experience its culture, rates may be slightly higher during this time.

See our Masai Mara safari vacations to peruse our offerings for wildebeest excursions.

From October to December

East Africa has shoulder season from October to December when peak season ends.

A brief spell of rain arrives in some parts of Kenya, restoring the vegetation in the game reserves and national parks.

Rainfall, on the other hand, usually has no effect on the standard of the safari and is frequently a welcome diversion from the intense heat of prior peak seasons. Because of this, it provides the perfect home for migratory birds and newborn animals.

Due to a decline in tourists, pricing for safaris are lowering, making it an excellent opportunity to secure outstanding value. Game viewing is still superb during this time of year.

Consider booking The Best of Kenya Safari, our 10-day tour that visits seven of Kenya’s most beautiful national parks. An expert guide who has driven, hosted, and amused you the entire way will take you through Hell’s Gate National Park, the stunning Lake Bogoria, and more.
